I’ve always been told I have an abnormal relationship with my siblings. My friends would always say, “oh you’re so lucky to be friends with your siblings, I hate mine” or they would see us together and be envious of how well we actually get along. And I’d say, “yeah, I guess I am, we’ve just always been this way.”
With an older sister and younger brother, I was in the middle (literally and figuratively) quite a bit while we were growing up. However, despite all of our little differences, we have always remained good friends. Going on family vacations was never something I dreaded, we always had a good time and the three of us always had a great dynamic. We would spend entire summers taking turns playing video games and the other two sitting in the same room watching/helping the one playing; or we would be playing some multiplayer game for hours (shout-out to Super Smash Brothers, Mario Kart, and Pokémon Stadium). It was pretty lucky that we had overlapping interests though. I’m not sure what would have happened if one of just DID NOT take interest in what we wanted to do. Lucky for us, that didn’t happen. We all watched pretty much the same shows and movies, so there are so numerous quotes/inside jokes between the 3 of us, it’s like a different language. At this point, we don’t even know what some of them are from (but they’re still funny).
When I was younger, my sister and I were closer, probably due to the fact that we shared the same room until I was in the 7th grade. I wanted to be just like her, did all the things she did, was interested in the same things, etc. I got the opportunity to become closer to my brother after our sister left for college and it was just us 2 in the house. I was sad to see her go, but so glad I had the opportunity to hang out with my brother one on one and create a better friendship. Besides the Sailor, those two are my absolute best friends. I know I can go to them for advice and support (and drinks!) ,and they can do the same for me. Even though I’m farther away now, we still keep in touch and visit fairly often. I’ve made it a goal to see my family at least once a month, if not more.
Now that we are grown up and one of us is married (guilty!), our dynamic has shifted a little. I don’t think the Sailor could have gotten two better siblings in a marriage and being an only child, he know has one of each. He fits in just right with our little group and to have the complete support and approval of my siblings means the world to me. If they didn’t like him, I don’t think we would have gotten this far. Luckily now though, he fits in great with our little trio and I have just as strong a bond as I did before the marriage.
