Our Military Love Story

November 17, 2016

Hey guys!  I know I've been super slack about posting, apparently November is just as busy as October was so far >.<  Anyway, as a little "throwback Thursday" (aka my favorite tag on Instagram), I thought I would share with you our military love story.

Now the Sailor and I knew each other way before he entered the Navy.  We actually met in the 7th grade at good old Durham School of the Arts.  Coincidentally, our families moved into the same neighborhood on the SAME STREET the summer before 7th grade started.  So in all seriousness, we go WAY back.  We didn't really start talking or hanging out until the 10th grade.  We were both in band and some other classes together, and he even taught me how to play Halo at his house.  By junior year, I would say we were best friends.  There was quite a bit of flirting, and we even ended up going to prom together that year.

Look at that sweet-ass awkward 2006 prom photo

In 2007, we graduated and went off to different colleges, him to Appalachian State University and me to UNC-Chapel Hill, and we kept in touch and saw each other during school breaks.   We had always had a very flirty relationship and it rekindled every time we saw each other, whether we were single or not.

After I graduated in 2011, I was working at Panera and had a lot of free time on my hands, so I decided to finally make the trek up to Boone to see my favorite "mountain man" who was still in school.  We were both single at the time and had way too much (legal) fun every time I would visit, and I thought we were finally headed down the path of actually dating!  On one of my last visits, the Sailor sat me down and told me he was going to leave school and join the Navy.  I was so upset with him for leaving school without finishing and for deciding to willingly choose a career that could put him in danger.  After hearing all of this, I thought it would be better if we just stayed friends during this crazy part of his life.  Honestly, I was already nervous about dating my best friend and with him going who knows where, I didn't think we would make it through.

Look how adorable we are tailgating

So we stayed friends, he joined the Navy, I got a real job and he deployed.  We talked a lot online and emailed a lot during his first deployment (again with the flirting), and after he returned I told him I was going to drive up to Norfolk and he was going to take me on a date.  From the moment I got there, everything felt right and natural and we never looked back <3

We dated for a little over a year before the Sailor proposed the weekend I was visiting for his ship's holiday party.  The proposal was almost ruined by a few over-eager sailors, but it was still perfect to me, and I got the shiniest ring I have ever seen in my life!  I always tease him about "claiming me" before he left because two months after the proposal, his ship deployed for seven months.  So I drowned my sorrows in copious care packages and planning our wedding without any input from the groom for most of the time.  Some would say he got off easy, coming back to an already planned wedding where all he had to do was pick the cake and show up ;)

Anyway, after a year and a half of planning, we finally got married on April 23 of this year and you all know the rest :)  It's a long, complicated story, but it worked out for us in the end <3

I know everyone's is different, what's your military/non-military love story?
