What to Do When You're Feeling Homesick

 I’ve said this before and I will say it again: I hate change.  Then you’ll say, what the hell woman, you married a man whose career is going to create a world of change for you!!  Yeah…life’s a bitch.  The hardest thing for me was moving away from my family.  I would eat dinner every Thursday with my parents, and I would see my brother and sister as often as I wanted.  If they wanted to go to a cool place for dinner, I could be there!  So that’s been an adjustment.  Over these last ten months, I’ve done well adjusting, but it will still hit me when I talk to my family and realize it’s been a month or more since I’ve seen them.  Overall, I am fortunate that I’m only four hours away from family, but it’s still hard for me.

 

Here are some ways to make it feel like your family isn’t as far away as they seem:

 

Phone call – in the days of the digital era, it’s easier and quicker to just text or snapchat someone. But having a real conversation with someone, even if it’s just for 30 minutes, can make both of you feel so much better. My mom and I TALK and it’s not up to Gilmore Girls banter, but it’s close. I am always in a better mood when I get off the phone, and I feel more connected with her and everyone else she updates me on.

 

Letters – “Nobody writes letters anymore!” Uh, yes they do, why do you think stationary is still as pretty as ever? It was one of the most exciting things when I got a real-life letter from one of my friends back home. Yes, it’s slower for those that want instant gratification, but you can say more in a letter and it’s a fun hobby to pick up. My grandma and I used to write letters and those are the most cherished things I have from her.

 

Email – here’s my real letter compromise.It’s sent quickly, but can catch you up on a lot of things. And the benefit of email is that you can read what you sent previously so that you don’t repeat yourself, which I often worry about in letters. And thanks to the cloud (which I don’t trust), you can keep all the emails you send without taking up space.

 

Travel – “Wtf, that’s when you actually see the person!” Yes I know, but it’s good to plan trips so that you have a time to look forward to. Military families don’t have the luxury of planning way far in advance, but even a month ahead is all it takes when you’re feeling homesick.Don’t forget that it’s not just a one-way street, family can visit you too!I made sure we got a two bedroom apartment specifically for family to come visit us! And it’s cheaper for them too when they don’t have to get a hotel room.

 

These are just the main things that I have found help me out when I get down.  What do you guys use to help cure homesickness?
